Summary of review and consultation process
In December 2008 an expert panel meeting was held to review the content of the unit standards and the National Certificate in Dairy Farming (Artificial Insemination) with strands in Site Technician, and Industry Technician [Ref: 0967] following feedback from industry. During January 2009 the artificial insemination sector (Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC) and AmBreed) was consulted regarding recommendations the expert panel made. Sector feedback was considered and included where appropriate. The changes made to the qualification structure are intended to significantly increase uptake of the Site Technician strand and assessment of Unit 17467, Artificially inseminate cows as a site technician.
Main changes resulting from the review
· Standard 25714 has been created to enable artificial insemination technicians to demonstrate knowledge of dairy cow reproduction. A special note is included in this standard to explain its relationship to standards 19085 and 19086.
· Standard 21757 has been moved from the Farming Skills domain to the Dairy Farming domain.
· Credits have been increased for standards 7411 and 17467 to better reflect the total learning time needed to achieve the industry required level of accuracy while operating at an appropriate throughput rate.
· Special notes have been updated to reflect changes made to standard content.
· Wording in performance criteria has been made more consistent with special note definitions, for example organisational standards and procedures has been adopted throughout.
