Date new versions published                                                          March 2009

Planned review date                                                                           December 2012

Reason for the roll-over and revision

The Boating Industry Training Organisation is in the process of carrying out an extensive review of the National Certificate in Boatbuilding (Level 4) with strands in Marine Cabinetmaking, Composite Sparmaking, Alloy Boatbuilding, Marine Rigging, Marine Painting, Composite Boatbuilding, Steel Boatbuilding, Wooden Boatbuilding, Marine Systems Engineering, Metal Sparmaking, Composite Production Trailer Boats, and Alloy Production Trailer Boats [Ref: 0877].  The review of the qualification should be completed early this year.

The review of the qualification led to a review of 33 unit standards and the development of 50 new unit standards.  That process was completed in December 2008.  The remaining unit standards have been rolled over, with some revisions made to entry information, special notes or performance criteria to maintain their currency until they are reviewed.

Main changes resulting from the revision

·         Unit standard 9917 - removal of special note as relationship with unit standard 9940 no longer exists.

·         Unit standard 9922 - typing error corrected in special note 2b.

·         Unit standard 9938 - recommended standards listed in entry information removed.

·         Unit standard 9944 - accreditation information amended to match AMAP 0136.

·         Unit standards 9947 and 11784 the titles of prerequisites in entry information updated.

·         Unit standards 10853-10869, 11751, 11752, 11757, 11761, 11769, 11776 the Maritime Safety Authority name updated to Maritime New Zealand to reflect change made in 2005.

·         Unit standard 11768 - special note 1 - two references to 'power boats' corrected to 'sail boats'.

·         Unit standards 11762, 11765, 11766, and 18270 - repealed legislation removed and replaced.

·         Unit standards 11785 and 11791 - references to the Finishing Description Standard and the reference text removed.

·         Unit standard 11763 - reference to the Shipping (Distress Signals and Prevention of Collisions) Regulations 1988 and safe ship management removed.

·         Unit standards 9922, 9933, 9937, 9940 and 25152 have been amended to more accurately reflect learning outcomes - see impacts below.

There are no impacts on existing provider accreditations or on Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP) Ref: 0136.
