Summary of review and consultation process
Members from the Ngā Mahi ā te Whare Pora Whakaruruhau met in February 2005, March and April 2005, August 2007, November 2007, and September 2008 to review the unit standards.
The unit standards listed above were reviewed as part of the NZQA Māori Qualifications Services review cycle, to ensure that the standards are fit for purpose and applicable to current issues.
Previous reviews resulted in important elements and performance criteria being deleted from the unit standards. This resulted in the unit standards being too similar in content and the Whakaruruhau has recommended that some of the omitted information be re-inserted.
Comments and recommendations from all parties were incorporated throughout the review process. The final versions of the unit standards were endorsed by the Whakaruruhau working panel.
Main changes resulting from the review
· Prerequisite standards from the Whakairo subfield have been removed and replaced with one prerequisite, Unit 18689, Whakamārama i ngā tikanga a te Whare Pora.
· Occupational Health and Safety legislation has been added to unit standards that have a practical base.
· Changes have been made to the special notes to clarify and maintain consistency throughout the unit standards.
· Changes to some unit standard titles, purpose statements, elements, and performance criteria have been made to add more clarity to the standards.
· The Whakaruruhau looked closely at the levels and credit allocations, and have made some adjustments.
· Unit 7899, Gather and prepare pīngao for whāriki has been designated expiring and will not be replaced. It was a concern to the Whakaruruhau that candidates would not be able to harvest sufficient pīngao to complete a whāriki due to pīngao being a protected resource.
· Unit 7897, Gather and prepare harakeke for whāriki has been designated expiring and will not be replaced due to the content being overly similar to that of Unit 7904, Gather and prepare harakeke for whāriki whakairo.
· Unit 18696, Whatu maro and Unit 18699, Whatu rāpaki have been designated expiring and will not be replaced due to the content of both unit standards being covered in Unit 7890, Whatu maro and rāpaki.
· Unit 18689, Whakamārama i ngā tikanga a te Whare Pora has been amended to become a knowledge based rather than a practical unit standard.
· Unit 7901, Raranga pokepoke, has been designated expiring and will not be replaced. It has been determined by the Whakaruruhau that this unit standard was similar in content to Unit 7908, Raranga koronae.
· Unit 7894, Raranga tātua has been designated expiring and will not be replaced due to the content being overly similar to Unit 18693, Raranga traditional tātua.
Unit standards categorised as category D expire at the end of December 2011.
Impact on Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP)
Unit standard 7867 has been transferred from AMAP 0162 to AMAP 0226 because the level has been reduced from 4 to 2 and it now comes within the Base Scope of Accreditation (BSAS) for schools.
