Summary of review and consultation process

This qualification was designed for farm dairy supervisors who manage the maintenance of milk quality and supervise the milking of dairy cows.  Version 1 was registered in January 2008.  Feedback from industry stakeholders including dairy farmers, veterinarians and industry sector organisations indicated that further training in the management of mastitis would be the logical training progression.  Standard 25371 was registered in April 2009 around the skills of developing, implementing and monitoring a mastitis management plan on farm, as well as developing the procedures documents to manage mastitis.

The decision was made to add an optional strand in Mastitis Management to this qualification rather than create a new qualification as the knowledge gained in the compulsory section provides much of the information needed to develop mastitis management action plans.  This decision was made after circulating two draft qualifications for internal consultation with key business units and also based on the results of a pilot course held in December 2008.  Suggestions were further considered and incorporated if valid.  This qualification has been endorsed by the Agriculture Industry Committee prior to submission to NZQA for evaluation and registration.
