Summary of review and consultation process

 

In 2008, FITEC introduced a new forestry qualification: the National Certificate in Forest Operations (Level 3) [Ref: 1411].  During the launch of this qualification it was noted that production thinning operations were increasing due to an increase in demand for roundwood and pulpwood products as well as new demand from biofuel producers.  As a result of this increase in demand, a new strand was developed for inclusion in this forestry qualification.  The development of this new strand led to the review of this unit standard.  As part of this review, FITEC consulted with trainers and assessors who endorsed the proposed changes to this unit standard.

 

Main changes resulting from the review

 

·         Since the last review of this unit standard, the skills and hazard levels in the working environment have changed, and the level of the unit standard dropped from 4 to 3.

·         The previous version of this unit standard contained some repetitive performance criteria which have been combined in the revised version to clarify the outcome of the unit standard.

·         Some of the wording has been improved to clarify the performance criteria.

·         The special notes have been standardised to fit with FITEC's Unit Standard Writing Guide.
