The Forest Industries Training and Education Council (FITEC) has completed the registration of the unit standard listed above.  It was developed to replace unit standard 1250 designated as expiring following a review in May 2008.

Date new standard published                                                          September 2009

Planned review date                                                                           December 2012

Summary

The expiry of unit standard 1250 was based on feedback from industry that production thinning (felling and extraction of trees during the growing cycle to produce an economically saleable product) was rarely being done due to a decrease in demand for the product as an input to pulp and fibreboard production.  However, the operation is becoming popular again due to the increase in demand for the product as a source of biofuel and also as an input product to the pulp and fibreboard processes to replace sawmill chip that is no longer available due to a high number of sawmill closures over the past two years.

In response to the renewed demand FITEC have developed a replacement unit standard 25952, which will be included in the Thinning for Extraction strand of National Certificate in Forest Operations (Level 3) with strands in Establishment, Pruning, Thinning to Waste (Small Trees), Thinning to Waste (Large Trees) Strand, Thinning for Extraction, Tree Felling - Basic Techniques, Breaking Out for Ground Based Harvesting, Breaking Out for Cable Harvesting, and Landing Operations [Ref: 1411].  There will be an exemption in the qualification for people who already hold credit for unit standard 1250.

New development

·      Expiring unit standard 1250 has been replaced by unit standard 25952 and registered in the Tree Felling domain.

·      The Review Category for unit standard 1250 has been changed from D to C.
