Review of Electricity Supply qualification

National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Line Mechanic Distribution Live Work) (Level 5) [Ref: 1119]

The Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation (ESITO) has completed the review of the qualification above.

Date new versions published                                                          August 2010

The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2014.

Summary of review and consultation process

The review was carried out as part of a periodic review cycle.  Industry consultation determined that the qualification still met the requirements of NZECP 46:2003 Part 1 Glove and Barrier and Part 3 Stick to which it is aligned, and all practices and terminology were still relevant and up-to-date.  However, feedback indicated that it could only be achieved by candidates who undertook both glove and barrier and stick work, which was not possible in all workplaces.  Industry was invited to participate in a steering group which was convened and endorsed changes to the qualification structure to allow it to be achieved by those undertaking only stick work.

Main changes resulting from the review

The qualification was replaced as the structure was changed from a compulsory set to a core qualification with an optional strand.  All glove and barrier standards in the compulsory section were moved to the new optional strand in Glove and Barrier up to 33kV.

The core qualification can now be achieved by candidates undertaking live work using stick techniques.  For those candidates who complete additional live work using glove and barrier techniques they will now be recognised by the optional strand.
