Date new versions published                                                          July 2010

The next qualification review is planned to take place during December 2014.

Summary of review and consultation process

In 2006, BITO initiated the review of the level 4 boatbuilding qualification [Ref: 0877].  Marine industry consultation indicated the need to review many of the standards in the qualification, develop new standards in order to address the changing skill requirements of the industry, and include these new and reviewed standards in the qualification.

BITO also reviewed the level 3 boatbuilding qualification [Ref: 1493].  Consultation indicated that many marine painting apprentices found it difficult to complete all of the standards in the qualification.  This is because many companies tend to specialise in either the interior painting or the exterior painting of boats because the skills involved are different.  This indicated the need to offer a qualification that allows specialisation in either interior or exterior marine painting.  Three strands (Fill and Fair Marine Substrates, Interior Marine Painting, and Exterior Marine Painting) have therefore been added to the qualification at review.

Main changes resulting from the review

The qualifications were restructured to meet industry training needs - particularly in relation to the marine painting sector.  Therefore, the content of each qualification was updated to better reflect these needs.
