Summary of review and consultation process
These standards have been reviewed to ensure they meet the current needs of the industry and recognise the knowledge and skills required for a number of different roles in crop growing.
The standards have had no reported usage since they were first registered and there was no evidence of interest in using any of these standards in the future. Feedback from potential providers indicated that the standards were too high in level. As a result of this, in June and August 2008 the Whakamahi Whenua Whakaruruhau, made up of representatives from the Horticulture Industry Training Organisation, Organic Aotearoa New Zealand, Department of Conservation, and vegetable gardeners, decided that standards 16383-16401 should be designated as expiring and not be replaced.
New, lower level standards were developed to encourage uptake by providers. These standards are not currently part of any qualification, but it is envisaged that they will be included in qualifications to be developed at a future date.
Standards 16402-16406 were not reviewed at these hui, but will be reviewed in the next review cycle.
Main changes resulting from the review
· Standards 16383-16401 have been designated expiring; they no longer meet the needs of the industry.
· Nine new, lower level standards were developed to meet the needs of the industry and education providers.
Unit standards categorised as category D expire at the end of December 2010.
Impact on Accreditation and Moderation Action Plan (AMAP)
AMAP 0166 has been updated to reflect the changes made to the standards.
