Review of Sports Turf Management qualification

National Diploma in Sports Turf Management (Level 6) [Ref: 1272]

The New Zealand Sports Turf Industry Training Organisation (NZSTITO) has completed the review of the qualification listed above.

Date new version published                                                             November 2010

The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2015.

Summary of review and consultation process

The qualification was reviewed due to the introduction of a new qualification, the National Certificate in Sports Turf (Level 5) [Ref: 1558] in 2010, and changes to Massey University papers which were available through credit transfer arrangements.

The National Certificate in Sports Turf (Level 5) [Ref: 1558] was developed to create an effective qualifications pathway from the National Certificate in Sports Turf Management (Level 4) [Ref: 0203] as industry representatives had indicated a need for a Level 5 qualification for people wishing to work in management positions in the sports turf industry.  The review of this qualification considered whether there was still a need for a Level 6 diploma in this qualification pathway.

Also, Massey University had indicated that they would no longer offer Bachelor of Applied Science turf papers, which were available through credit transfer arrangements towards award of this qualification.  As a result of that change the credit transfer arrangements in the qualification needed to be updated.

Industry representatives were consulted at the end of 2009 by questionnaire survey to confirm the ongoing need for this qualification, and to seek their feedback on any changes that were required to meet the future needs of industry.  The questionnaire survey was sent to all workplace assessors/employers, sector representatives, past graduates, current trainees, and potential trainees who had completed the National Certificate in Sports Turf Management (Level 4) [Ref: 0203].

The results of that consultation confirmed that there was still a need for a level 6 Diploma qualification in sports turf management.

From late 2009, NZSTITO was actively engaged in discussions with Massey University to develop a shared path forward where NZSTITO could offer trainees a realistic learning pathway towards award of the qualification, and, following that, to develop a Memorandum of Understanding.  As a result trainees now have the option of completing a Massey University Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology, after completing this qualification.

Main changes resulting from the review

The purpose statement was updated with an explanation of the relationship between this qualification and the National Certificate in Sports Turf (Level 5) [Ref: 1558].  Progressions following completion of this qualification were clarified and, as a result, generic business qualifications were included in the educational pathway information.  Massey University Bachelor of Applied Science turf papers were removed from credit transfer arrangements and additional relevant Bachelor of AgriScience, Bachelor of AgriCommerce, and Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology papers were added.
