Review of Seafood Vessel Operations qualifications
National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (Fishing Technology) [Ref: 1152]
National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (Nautical Skills) [Ref: 1153]
The Seafood Industry Training Organisation has completed the review of the qualifications listed above.
Date new versions published October 2010
The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2014.
Summary of review and consultation process
Many of the unit standards in the Seafood Vessel Operations domain were due for review in 2009 and therefore these qualifications were reviewed at the same time. An advisory group, which included industry experts, assessors, training provider representatives, and other relevant stakeholders, met in August 2009 and 2010 to review these qualifications.
The advisory group noted that the structure of Ref: 1152 did not cover the specialist skill sets required of the crew on seafood vessels. As a result, this qualification was replaced with a newly developed qualification. The replacement qualification includes a compulsory section and three strands to meet industry requirements.
Also, the advisory group reported that Ref: 1153 continued to meet the requirements of the industry and therefore no changes were made to the qualification.
Main changes resulting from the review
National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (Fishing Technology) [Ref: 1152]
National Certificate in Seafood Vessel Operations (Level 3) with strands in Net Making, Rescue Boat Operation, and Crane Operation [Ref: 1593]
