Summary

 

In 2010, three unit standards were developed to assess literacy skills in secondary, tertiary, and workplace contexts.  Feedback from the secondary sector indicated that it would not be possible for students who were users of New Zealand Sign Language to achieve this unit standard as currently written, which would then impact on their ability to meet the literacy requirements for NCEA Level 1.

 

The revision was undertaken to rectify this.  The revised standard was sent out to the Literacy Project Advisory Group, teachers and organisations involved in education for the deaf, and the Ministry of Education.  No objections to the changes were received although feedback contributed to further changes to the standard. 

 

Main changes

 

·      Two new explanatory notes were added and terminology changed to clarify that users of New Zealand Sign Language can be assessed against this standard.
