National Certificate in Electricity Supply (Power Technician) (Level 5) [Ref: 1260]

The Electricity Supply Industry Training Organisation (ESITO) has completed the review of the qualification listed above.

Date new versions published                                                          February 2011

The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2014.

Summary of review and consultation process

The review was carried out as part of a periodic review cycle.  A broad range of experienced industry technicians and engineers were consulted and a number of changes to the qualification were recommended in line with the wider range of technological knowledge now required by power technicians in order to maintain and service the latest components and equipment.  It was also considered important to better align the qualification with the New Zealand Diploma in Engineering [Ref: 112950], developed by the New Zealand Board for Engineering Diplomas, to ensure a smooth progression to this higher level qualification, which can be completed by power technicians.

Main changes resulting from the review

An optional generation and sustainable energy strand was added to the qualification to recognise the distinct additional skill set required by technicians working in this sector.  A number of unit standards were added and other standards were removed from the qualification.  The credit total of the qualification was significantly increased.
