Skills Active Aotearoa Limited has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.

Date new versions published                                                          July 2011

Planned review date                                                                           December 2016

Summary

The standards listed above have been reviewed following extensive consultation with the Aquatics industry, and as part of the review of the National Certificate in Community Recreation (Aquatics) (Level 3) [Ref: 0937].

Specifically this process has incorporated both a scheduled review of the National Pool Life Guard Award (NPLA) and related unit standards with the New Zealand Recreation Association, and a review of the unit standards that currently form the Assistant Swim Teacher Award (ASTA) in conjunction with the swim education sector.  The review has ensured the standards continue to meet industry requirements, and that they are clear, logical and fit for purpose.

As part of the review process the standards have been transferred into the new Recreation and Sport - Aquatics domain in the new Recreation and Sport subfield that was created following a review of the subfield and domain classifications in the Sport and Community Recreation subfields.

Main changes

·      New standards 27498, Develop water safety and survival skills and 27499, Lead a simulated major emergency response in an aquatic facility, were developed to fill a gap identified by the review.

·      Significant changes were made to the titles, outcomes and evidence requirements of standards 5683, 5684, 5685, and 5686 to improve assessment and better reflect the current practices and industry requirements.

·      The credits of standard 5683 increased from 4 to 5 because the outcomes were expanded to include aquatic supervision techniques.
