The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2016.

Summary of review and consultation process

In June 2010 the Kitchen and Bathroom Advisory Group met to review the current kitchen design unit standards and qualifications and to discuss the development of unit standards and qualifications for the bathroom design sector.  As a result of the discussion the qualifications were amended to reflect the changes to the unit standards and the inclusion of the bathroom design sector, especially the change in levels.

The National Certificate in Design (Kitchen Design) (Level 2) [Ref: 1473] was amended quite considerably in structure to accommodate the inclusion of a bathroom design section.  This was as a result of the review of the unit standards where skills common to both kitchen and bathroom design were merged together.

The National Certificate in Design (Advanced Kitchen Design) [Ref: 1381] was designated expiring and will not be replaced.  However, a new National Diploma in Design (Kitchen or Bathroom Design) has been developed; the industry believes this is a better fit with the industry's requirements.  The amended qualifications were sent out for wide consultation throughout the sector and the amendments were endorsed in August 2010.

Main changes resulting from the review

·      Titles have been amended to include bathroom design.

·      Level of the National Certificate in Design (Kitchen Design) (Level 3) [Ref: 1300] has increased from 3 to 4.

·      The National Certificate in Design (Advanced Kitchen Design) (Level 4) [Ref: 1381] has been designated expiring.

·      A new National Diploma in Design (Kitchen or Bathroom Design) [Ref: 1686] has been developed.

·      Content and structure have been amended to incorporate strands.

·      Unit standards have been updated following review.
