Summary of review and consultation process
This review began in August 2009 following the review of unit standards in the Reo Māori Media subfield. The focus of the review was to make the qualifications more accessible and attractive to their target audiences.
MQS conducted the review in consultation with the Whakaruruhau, the Communication and Media Industry Training Organisation, iwi radio stations, secondary schools, and training providers.
Main changes resulting from the review
The National Certificate in Reo Māori Media (Introductory Media Skills) [Ref: 1024] was replaced by two newly developed national certificates which focus on introductory and foundation skills.
The content and structure of the National Diploma in Reo Māori Media with strands in Journalism, Radio, and Television (Level 5) [Ref: 1146] were updated.

Standards 7259, 7263, 7267, 7271, 10197, 10198, 10303, 10353, 10823, 10825, 10826, 10831, 19749 from the replaced qualification are included in this replacement qualification.
The last date for assessments to take place for the replaced qualification is 31 March 2011. Version 1 of the replaced qualification is no longer achievable. NZQA Māori Qualifications Services (MQS) is not aware of any existing candidates enrolled in programmes leading to the award of this qualification.

Standard 19748 from the replaced qualification is included in this replacement qualification.

Changes to structure and content
· Standards 10264 and 10356 were removed from the old Core Compulsory section.
· Standards 26257 and 26258 were added to the new Compulsory section.
· Standards 10184, 10278, and 10378 were removed from the Radio Strand because they have expired.
· Standard 23106 replaced standard 10355, and standard 23125 replaced standard 10364, in the Radio Strand.
· The Journalism Strand now consists of two specified standards instead of three sets. Standard 23111 replaced standards 10366, 10367, and 10368 from Set 1. Standards 10360 and 10361 were removed from the strand because they have expired without replacement. Standard 23123 was added to the strand.
· The Television Strand was removed from the qualification because the standards included in the strand have expired or been designated as expiring without replacement.
The last date for assessments to take place for version 1 of this qualification is 31 March 2011. Version 1 is no longer achievable. NZQA Māori Qualifications Services (MQS) is not aware of any existing candidates enrolled in programmes leading to the award of this qualification.
This qualification contains standards that replace expiring or expired standards. For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring or expired standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards. See table below.
