Summary

In June 2010 the Kitchen and Bathroom Advisory Group met to review the current kitchen design unit standards and to discuss the development of unit standards for the bathroom design sector. As a result of the discussion and feedback from the assessors and moderators in the kitchen design sector, the kitchen design unit standards were also rewritten to reflect a greater depth of knowledge and skills resulting in a change of level to most of the unit standards. Some of the unit standards were rewritten to apply to both kitchen and bathroom design and seventeen new unit standards were developed to fill identified gaps. These amendments resulted in nine unit standards being replaced by nine new unit standards. The amended unit standards were sent out for wide consultation throughout the sector and the amendments were endorsed in August 2010.

The domains of Product Design and Spatial Design were previously under the scope of InfraTrain as the standard setting body. The Joinery Industry Training Organisation had developed a number of unit standards in the area of product design for the kitchen and bathroom design sectors. InfraTrain handed over standard setting responsibility for the Product Design and Spatial Design domains to the Joinery Industry Training Organisation as they fit better within their scope of industry responsibility. The process of reassigning the domains within the Design subfield has been the responsibility of the Industry Training Federation who has run a series of meetings with all Industry Training Organisations who use design unit standards as well as provider representatives and representatives from the Ministry of Education. To ensure that the unit standards in these domains reflect the content and target audience the domains have been renamed Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Interior Design. To eliminate overlap between unit standards, those in the Spatial Design domain that overlap with unit standards in the Product Design domain have been designated expiring. These changes were endorsed by the sector in February 2011. The Joinery Industry Training Organisation intends to engage the sector in discussions on the development of new unit standards to meet their needs in the future.

Category C and D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2012

· Changes were made to credits to reflect the amended content of the unit standards.

· Changes were made to ranges, outcomes and evidence requirements to make them technically current.

· SSB details were changed from InfraTrain to Joinery Industry Training Organisation.

· Seventeen new unit standards were developed.

· Nine unit standards were replaced by new unit standards.
