The Ministry of Education has completed an early review of the achievement standards listed above.
New Registration date November 2011
Date new versions published November 2011
Planned review date December 2014
Summary of review and consultation process
An early review was undertaken of all but one of the Design and Visual Communication (DVC) achievement standards to address issues encountered during their first year of use. AS91066 (DVC 1.33) was not included in this review.
Consultation about the proposed changes involved the original writers of the standards, NZQA officials, and the president of the New Zealand Graphics and Technology Teachers Association (NZGATTA).
Main changes resulting from the review
AS91063 Design and Visual Communication 1.30 Ext
· Correction made to Explanatory Note 2
- Replacement of 'show' by 'describe' in the paragraph relating to the Merit grade; for consistency with the Achieved grade.
- Removal of 'relative to the context of the design brief'; the phrase was redundant.
- Changes to wording of Excellence grade paragraph; to focus on the intent of the design features and to provide guidance about the evidence required (a body of related sketches).
AS91064 Design and Visual Communication 1.31 Ext
· Changes made to Explanatory Note 2
- Deletion of 'and scale' from the paragraph relating to the Achieved grade; 'scale' is not necessary.
- Changes made to the Excellence grade paragraph; to clarify 'effective communication' and remove 'exploded' (views), because exploded views are not relevant to this standard.
AS91065 Design and Visual Communication 1.32 Ext
· Corrections made to Explanatory Note 2
- Deletion of 'and scale' from the paragraph relating to the Achieved grade; 'scale' is technically incorrect.
- Deletion of 'shape and/or' from the Merit grade as it was not needed; it is covered by 'form' in this instance.
- Rewording of Excellence grade paragraph to clarify 'effective communication', to provide guidance about the evidence required (a body of related sketches), and to better align with the Explanatory Notes in DVC 1.30 and DVC 1.31.
AS91067 Design and Visual Communication 1.34 Int
· Some re-wording of Explanatory Note 2 - to clarify the intent of the standard.
- Replacement of 'Identifying and explaining' by 'recognising'; 'Identifying and explaining' suggested that a text base response was required, whereas 'recognising' allows for a greater variety of evidence.
- Clarification of step up from Achieved to Merit: 'and/or' still required for Achieved; but 'and' now required for Merit and Excellence.
- Removal of 'development' and 'specified in the design brief', to better reflect the intent of the standard, and move it away from an emphasis on graphics practice.
- Changed 'appropriate' to 'meaningful' to clarify intent.
AS91068 Design and Visual Communication 1.35 Int
· Re-crafting of Explanatory Note 2 to more clearly articulate the intent, requirements, and step ups.
· Explanatory Note 4 expanded to include 'and the visual communication of the features of design ideas' as part of the definition of 'visual literacy'. This strengthens the definition.
· Explanatory Note 6 changed to provide guidance about the type of evidence that may be accepted in relation to research and rationales for design judgements, as well as guidance about how the evidence may be generated.
AS91069 Design and Visual Communication 1.36 Int
· In Explanatory Note 4, 'Design work' replaced by 'The organised body of work' for consistency with the title and achievement criteria.
Review Categories and changes to classification, title, level, and credits
The following summary shows the changes made to the standards as a result of the review. All changes are in bold. Where a new or a new version of an externally assessed achievement standard is registered, the following designation appears after the title [Externally Assessed].
Key to review category | |
A |
Dates changed, but no other changes are made - the new version of the standard carries the same ID and a new version number |
B |
Changes made, but the overall outcome remains the same - the new version of the standard carries the same ID and a new version number |
C |
Major changes that necessitate the registration of a replacement achievement standard with a new ID |
D |
Achievement standard will expire and not be replaced |
