Summary

At the last review of the Mau Rākau unit standards in 2007 the Whakaruruhau discussed the development of a subfield for Mau Rākau.  They were concerned that only the performance aspects of Mau Rākau and some aspects of tikanga were addressed in the current unit standards under the subfield Māori Performing Arts.  There was concern that the essence, the wairua and the true meaning of Mau Rākau would be lost forever.

A Notice of Intention to develop a Mau Rākau subfield in field Māori was sent to Whare Tu Taua Kura, providers, wharekura and mau rākau iwi representatives.  The first hui was hosted by Manaakitanga (Donna Grant) in Te Arawa and attendees were representatives from te Whare Tu Taua o Aotearoa, Te Whare Humārie o te Kīngitanga, Tuhoe Whare Maire, training providers, wharekura and some iwi representatives.  Those that did not attend acknowledged the tono and gave their support for the kaupapa.

The hui was a scoping hui for Mau Rākau.  Tikanga aspects, the link back to ngā Atua, to ngā Tipuna, to te Taiao and many other aspects from a Mau Rākau perspective were discussed.  A matrix was developed.  The number of domains and domain names were also developed.  Domains were proposed and have since been registered with NZQA.  The names of the domains are Te Parawhakawai, Te Mau Rākau, Te Rangatiratanga Mau Rākau.

Two further hui were held and the Whakaruruhau reviewed the current unit standards for relevance.  Four unit standards have been replaced and nine new standards developed.
