Summary of review and consultation process

Skills Active Aotearoa Limited completed a major review of the Community Recreation and Sport subfields in 2010.  The review involved a rationalisation of existing classification categories to enable better overview and management of SSB responsibilities and resulted in the creation of a new subfield, Recreation and Sport.

As a part of this rationalisation process a series of advisory group meetings involving representatives from the Recreation and Sports industry were held to review qualifications from the Community Recreation and Sport subfields.  The advisory groups included representatives from local authorities, providers, Regional Sports Trusts, community operators, the New Zealand Recreation Association and the New Zealand Secondary Schools Sports Coordinators Association.  The review set out to provide more efficient qualification pathways, by developing fewer qualifications that better reflected industry needs.

Main changes resulting from the review

The level 5 and 6 Community Recreation qualifications ([Ref: 0940] and [Ref: 0941]) were designated expiring without replacement because of low usage.

The other four qualifications were replaced by three newly developed qualifications.

Transition

Candidates currently enrolled in programmes or courses leading to the award of versions 3 or 4 of the replaced qualification may either complete the requirements for those versions by 31 December 2012 or transfer to this replacement qualification.  Candidates that wish to complete versions 3 or 4 of the replaced qualification must gain credit for standard 4879 before it expires in December 2011.  However, the content of the two qualifications is significantly different and the only standard that they share in common is standard 1304.

This qualification contains standards that replace earlier standards.  For the purposes of this qualification, people who have gained credit for the expiring standards are exempt from the requirement to gain credit for the replacement standards – see table below.
