Summary

In 2008, NZQA began to review unit standards in light of the Alignment of Standards (AoS) review.  The review of unit standards included consultation with tertiary providers and Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) to assess continued relevance and likely future use of the standards.  Unit standards that duplicated achievement standard outcomes and those without the likelihood of future tertiary use were recommended for expiry.

Home and Life Sciences - Textile Technology unit standards at Levels 2-4 have significant usage, including by tertiary providers.  It was determined that twenty-one of the unit standards in this domain were industry specific and therefore outside NZQA’s standard setting coverage.  The remaining seven unit standards were determined to be neither industry specific nor in alignment with the New Zealand Curriculum and so were recommended for expiry.

Following a formal request from the Apparel and Textile Industry Training Organisation (ATITO), it was determined that the twenty industry specific unit standards in domain Home and Life Sciences - Textile Technology came under ATITO’s industry coverage and did not duplicate outcomes in draft or registered achievement standards.  It was agreed that standard setting responsibility for the indentified unit standards at Levels 2-4 would be transferred from NZQA to ATITO.  However, in on 4 May 2012 that coverage was extended to Plastics and Materials Processing Industry Training Organisation Incorporated (PaMPITO).
