Signmaking
Summary of review and consultation process
In February 2011, after the dissolution of the Creative Trades Industry Training Organisation, the responsibility for the signmaking sector was transferred to the Communications and Media Industry Training Organisation. As part of this change of responsibility the qualification National Certificate in Signmaking with strands in Computer Graphics, Hand Lettering, and Electric Signmaking [Ref: 0306], was transferred and the Signmaking domain was moved from the Graphic Arts subfield to the Printing subfield.
In March 2011 the Signmaking Advisory Group, made up of industry representatives, an apprentices representative, and union representation, was convened to examine the existing unit standards and qualification. As a result of the review the skills, knowledge and attributes required for a signmaker were examined and a graduate profile developed. This resulted in the need for two qualifications in signmaking at levels 3 and 4 on the NZQF. This structure was endorsed by the Signmaking Advisory Group in May 2011 and a qualification pre-development application was submitted to NZQA for approval. This was approved on 16 December 2011 and the qualifications were developed and endorsed by the advisory group in February 2012.
Main changes resulting from the review
The National Certificate in Signmaking (Level 4) with strands in Computer Graphics, Hand Lettering, and Electric Signmaking [Ref: 0306] was replaced with two new qualifications.
