Summary

 

Unit standard 27671 was recognised as not fit for purpose.  Due to serious safety concerns contributed to by a recent fatality, the telehandler should not be assessed as a lifting device.  Concerns include:

·        the different types of telehandlers cause issues with the characteristics of the machines that may impact on stability during pick and carry operations with suspended loads

·        telehandlers do not have boom length indicators, boom angle indicators or safe load indicators.  It is the industry view that this makes it impractical and unsafe to use a telehandler as a crane

·        the resources required to bring a telehandler up to a standard that is fit for purpose have been considered by major companies to exceed the benefit of doing so.

 

This standard is not included in any qualification as a compulsory or as a specified optional standard and this standard is not a pre-requisite for any other standard currently listed on the Directory of Assessment Standards.  This means that there is no significant impact on current trainees, qualification providers or assessors.

 

The category D unit standard will expire at the end of July 2013
