Revision of Furniture qualification
National Certificate in Furniture (Level 3) with strands in Finishing, Machine Operator, Furniture Making, Frame Making, Upholstery, Upholstery Cutting, and Upholstery Sewing [Ref: 1503]
Competenz has revised the qualification above.
Date new version published February 2014
Reason for the revision
This revision was required to provide an apprenticeship pathway for people in the furniture industry that will continue to meet the Tertiary Education Commission’s (TEC) funding requirements. The TEC requirement for an apprenticeship pathway is 120 credits in total from the relevant contributing qualifications. Prior to this revision the total credits available were 117, from the combination of this qualification and the National Certificate in Furniture (Level 4) with strands in Furniture Design and Markets, Craft Finisher, Machine Setter, Furniture Maker, Advanced Upholstery, and Computer Numerical Controlled Machinery (CNC) [Ref: 1504].
Trainees that enter into an apprenticeship pathway in the furniture industry have been required to complete Unit 17602, Apply hazard identification and risk assessment procedures in the workplace as part of their training plan. Therefore, standard 17602 has been added to this qualification as the additional 4 credits it provides will ensure that the apprenticeship pathway continues to be available.
Industry representatives for furniture were consulted, and approved this revision.
Main changes resulting from the revision
Standard 17602 was added as a Core Compulsory standard, and overall credit totals for the qualification were increased accordingly. The opportunity was also taken to ensure the qualification remains achievable until its review.
