Summary

After the Targeted Review of Qualifications within the Solid Wood Manufacturing industry, and as part of the development of the New Zealand Certificates in Solid Wood Manufacturing and Finger Jointing, the above unit standards were reviewed.

The consultation included specialists in finger jointing, saw doctoring, sawmilling and timber machining from companies and training provider organisations in New Zealand.

Changes in technology used in the sawmilling industry have seen a need to update the log breakdown standards. This has resulted in two standards being replaced by one, more flexible standard. The replaced standards have been designated expiring.

Career pathways referenced in the New Zealand certificates highlight a new target learner group, which has a different technical background, entering into roles of responsibility in the finger jointing sector.  This has been reflected in the time taken for these people to gain the competency in the finger jointing standards relating to maintenance and operation.

Standard 15760, due to expire in 2014, was identified as required in training programmes leading to new qualifications in saw doctoring going forward.  Industry has confirmed the standard’s fitness for purpose; therefore, it has been reinstated and rolled over.

Main changes

·      Unit standards 15765 and 15767 were designated as expiring and were replaced by unit standard 28473.

·      The credit value of unit standard 15061 was increased to reflect feedback that the standard in fact requires more time for learners to achieve the competency.

·      The level and credit value of unit standard 15060 was raised to reflect feedback that the level of responsibility and breadth of skill required was more complex and required more time for learning and assessment.

·      Unit standard 15760 was reinstated and rolled over.

·      Outcome statements and evidence requirements were updated to reflect current industry practice.

·      Unit standard 15061 was reclassified to reflect this as a finger jointing sector skill, not a specialisation for a timber machinist.  This reflects the shift in industry focus.

·      A last date for assessment of superseded versions of unit standards to be reregistered was specified.  Results will not be accepted where the assessment date is after the last date for assessment.

Category C unit standards will expire at the end of December 2019

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is end of December 2018
