Summary

As part of the development of the New Zealand Certificates in Pulp and Paper Manufacturing resulting from the Targeted Review of Qualifications within the Pulp and Paper Manufacturing industry the above unit standards were reviewed.  The consultation included representatives of all pulp and paper manufacturing companies in New Zealand.  Some unit standards have been identified as no longer relevant to the industry and are being expired.

Some standards have had level and credit changes to reflect changes the industry has made in relation to work organisation.  The industry has raised their competent operator requirements to Level 4 to reflect the broader responsibilities operators have in this automated industry.  Previously, competent operators were recognised at Level 3.  This has meant an upgrading of operational standards to Level 4.  Credit values have been revised based on the new flatter work organisation, and reflect increases in time required for practice and additional learning to gain the higher level of competency.

Main changes

·      Unit standards 3562-3564, 3580, 3585, 3589, 3590, 3591, 3604 and 5676 were designated expiring.

·      Thirty unit standards had credit changes made to reflect the time required to reach the competency in the new work structures in the industry.

·      Forty-one unit standards had their level raised to reflect the reorganisation of work for competent operators going forward.

·      References, outcome statements, and evidence requirements were updated to reflect current industry practice.

Category D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2017
