Summary of review and consultation process

During 2011, a mandatory sector review of qualifications in the Hospitality sector, including Marae Catering, occurred.  The review for Marae Catering was considered a specialist area and was conducted separately from the ServiceIQ (Service Industry Qualifications, formerly the Hospitality Standards Institute) led review of Cooking and Catering qualifications. However, Service IQ are a stakeholder in the Marae Catering review and were included in consultations.  The review also encompassed broad consultation with representatives from secondary schools, private training establishments, Skills Active ITO, business operators, polytechnics, and marae – to ensure that the new qualifications meet current and future needs.

The review resulted in a recommendation that the National Certificate in Marae Catering (Level 2) [Ref: 1165] be designated expiring and replaced by the New Zealand Certificate in Manaaki Marae – Te Kāuta, Te Wharekai (Kaupae 2).  It also recommended that three new qualifications be developed at Levels 3 to 5, in order to meet the needs identified in the Needs Analysis.
