Summary of review and consultation process
The National Certificate in Recreation and Sport (Aquatics) (Level 3) with strands in Pool Lifeguard, Swim Education, and Pool Operations [Ref:1697] has been reviewed as part of the Targeted Review of Qualifications (TRoQ) process during 2013 to 2016. The mandatory review involved extensive consultation with stakeholders working across the Aquatics industry.
The existing national qualification has been replaced as part of a suite of New Zealand qualifications, as detailed below.

There are three new qualifications:
New Zealand Certificate in Aquatics (Senior Pool Lifeguard) (Level 4) [Ref: 3506]
New Zealand Certificate in Aquatics (Specialised Swim and Water Safety Teacher) (Level 4) with strands in Early Childhood Swimmers, Adult Swimmers, Adaptive Aquatics, and Stroke Mechanics [Ref: 3507]
New Zealand Certificate in Aquatic Treatment Systems (Level 4) [Ref: 3504]
Transition
The last date for assessment of the replaced qualification is 31 December 2019, at which time it will be designated as discontinued.
People currently working towards the replaced qualification may either complete the requirements by 31 December 2019 or transfer their results to the replacement qualification.
It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. However, anyone who feels that they have been disadvantaged may appeal to Skills Active Aotearoa at the address below:
