Review of Sawmilling qualification

The next qualification review is planned to take place during 2022.

Reason for the review

Industry feedback on these qualifications highlighted three issues:

1. GPO 3 has been interpreted as requiring candidates to operate a headrig, effectively blocking most learners from completing the qualification.
2. There was a strong preference for the qualification to allow for a sawmilling apprenticeship, to sit alongside those in finger jointing, saw doctoring, and timber machining.
3. This qualification should be available to headrig operators and to operators of the saw systems downstream from the headrig.

Summary of review and consultation process

Suggestions for developing the qualification have come from both industry and specialist training providers. The proposed change has been discussed with a cross section of industry representatives and training providers and signed off at a Solid Wood Sector Advisory Group meeting.

Main changes resulting from the review

The credit value of the qualification has been increased from 80 to 120 credits, to allow the creation of programmes for a sawmilling apprenticeship. A new review date has been set.

Transition

The last date of assessment for programmes leading to version 1 of this qualification is 31 December 2019. 

It is anticipated that no existing candidates will be disadvantaged by these transition arrangements. However, anyone who feels that they have been disadvantaged may appeal to Competenz at the address below. Appeals will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
