Summary

Waka ama is New Zealand’s fastest growing water activity.  It encompasses national, local and regional events that occur across the country and involves paddlers aged from 5 to 75 years old.  Waka ama are found in a range of outdoor recreation contexts including rivers, lakes and oceans.

These two new unit standards have been developed in conjunction with the national peak body Waka Ama NZ who represent over 5000 waka ama paddlers nationally and their associated clubs and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa who currently run the only tertiary waka ama programmes in the country.
