Summary

Primary ITO has reviewed a number of unit standards to better reflect the requirements of outcomes listed in the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care [Ref: 2487], Companion Animals strand, and to align these unit standards to current workplace practices in animal care facilities.

There are a number of organisations with consent to assess for these unit standards, however, use of current unit standards has been significantly declining since 2012.  Organisations with consent to assess, including schools, as well as industry stakeholders had the opportunity to review the relevant unit standards and offer feedback.  Consultation was conducted by phone from February to June 2018, and then by email in July 2008.  Feedback was actioned where appropriate.

Main changes

·      Eight unit standards were reviewed to reflect current industry practices;

·      Four unit standards were developed to reflect current workplace practices and meet the graduate outcomes of the qualification;

·      Unit 21381 was designated expiring as the outcomes changed significantly which necessitated a replacement unit standard; level was increased in the replacement unit standard to reflect the complexity of outcomes;

·      Levels and/or credits were changed for unit standards 5148, 5149, 5180, 7337, and 19894 to reflect the time taken to learn, practice and be assessed against the outcomes (credits), and to better reflect the complexity of outcomes (level).

The Category C unit standard will expire at the end of December 2019

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2019
