Summary

As part of the Targeted Review of Qualifications process and with the recent listing of New Zealand Certificates in Building, Construction, and Allied Trades Skills (BCATS), BCITO has reviewed a number of unit standards to ensure that they are still fit for purpose, are aligned with the requirements of the outcomes listed in new qualifications, and to update any other relevant information.

As a result of the review, the ‘demonstrate knowledge of’ standards for the various subsectors will be replaced with a new unit standard that will require candidates to demonstrate knowledge of at least two BCATS industries but will not specify which industries they must be.

Consultation on these unit standards began with a stakeholder survey in 2015; continued with many conversations as part of the development and roll out of Level 3; informed by the results of usage, moderation activities, and changes to the relevant industries; and finally confirmed with a group of well-respected BCATS teachers.

Main changes

·      All the ‘demonstrate knowledge of the [industry]’ unit standards, whose only differences are the specification of a particular BCATS industry, were designated expiring.  A new standard has been recommended as an alternative.

·      A new unit standard was developed to assess knowledge of different BCATS trades involved in the construction of a residential building.

·      The unit standards were updated using the latest template.

Category D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2020 or December 2021
