Summary

As part of the Targeted Review of Qualifications process, and with the recent listing of New Zealand Certificates in Building, Construction, and Allied Trades Skills (BCATS), BCITO has reviewed a number of unit standards to ensure that they are still fit for purpose, are aligned with the requirements of the outcomes listed in new qualifications, and to update any other relevant information.

Consultation on these unit standards began with a stakeholder survey in 2015; continued with many conversations as part of the development and roll out of Level 3; was informed by the results of usage, moderation activities, and changes to the relevant industries; and finally confirmed with a group of well-respected BCATS teachers. The unit standards within this change report required minor changes.

Main changes

·      Guidance information was added to make it explicit that information supporting assessment decisions should, wherever possible, be collected naturally as the BCATS projects progress.

·      Requirements that unnecessarily excluded projects relating to some of the BCATS industries were removed from units 24350, 24351, 24355. These requirements were ones that specified what materials, tools, equipment, or machinery had to be used.

·      Superfluous definitions and words were deleted.

·      Where appropriate, ‘job specifications’ was replaced with ‘BCATS project documentation’.

·      Range statements of some standards were adjusted to more clearly specify requirements for assessment.

·      Credit value of US 24358 was increased from 2 to 3 credits to better reflect the amount of work typically needed to achieve it.

·      The title of unit 12939 was changed to remove superfluous words.

·      The title of unit 24350 was changed to reflect the order of its outcomes.

·      ‘Specified’ was deleted from the title of unit 24351 to reflect that fixed machinery is no longer specified.

·       ‘Workshop’ was deleted from the title of 24356 to enable teachers to assess this standard in a non-workshop BCATS environment if they wished.

·      ‘Instrumental’ was replaced with ‘formal’ in the purpose and contents of standard 24353 and the definition of drawing amended to reflect that traditional instrumental drawing and computer-assisted design programmes can both be used for construction drawings.

·      The title of 25921 was amended to include ‘with a drawer’ in response to occasional incidents of teachers not realising this had to be part of the project.

·      Where needed, guidance information was tidied to make its intent clearer.

·      The unit standards were updated using the latest template.

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2020
