Skills Active Aotearoa has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.

Date new versions published                                                               July 2019

Planned review date                                                                              December 2024

Summary

The review of these unit standards was prompted by the outcomes of the mandatory review of qualifications, specifically the listing of:

·            New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Leadership (Level 4) with strands in Abseil, Bush, Caving, Education Outside The Classroom (EOTC), Mountain Biking (Grade 2), Raft Guide (Grade II), River Boarding Guide (Grade II), and Rock Climbing [Ref: 3662]

·            New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Leadership (Guiding) (Level 5) with strands in Bush, Caving, Education Outside The Classroom (EOTC), Mountain Biking (Grade 4), National Raft Guide (Grade III), National River Boarding Guide (Grade III), National River Boarding Guide (Grade IV/V), and Rock Climbing [Ref: 3660]

·            New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Leadership (Instruction) (Level 5) with strands in Alpine, Bush, Caving Streamway, Education Outside The Classroom (EOTC), Mountain Biking (Grade 4), and Rock Climbing [Ref: 3661]

·           New Zealand Certificate in Outdoor Senior Leadership (Level 6) with strands in Alpine, Bush, Caving, Education Outside The Classroom (EOTC), Mountain Biking (Grade 5), Senior Raft Guide (Grade III), Senior Raft Guide (Grade IV/V), Senior River Boarding Guide (Grade III), Senior River Boarding Guide (Grade IV/V), and Rock Climbing [Ref: 3663]

Feedback from stakeholders was gathered through an open consultation process and used to guide the development of the programmes of industry training for the qualifications above, and the development and review of the associated unit standards.

The reviewed unit standards were found to no longer be fit for purpose, relevant, nor aligned with outcomes listed in the new qualifications.  It was determined that the standards should be expired.

New unit standards were developed to meet industry needs for the following strands:

·         Canoeing

·         Sea Kayaking

·         White Water Kayaking

·         Sit-on-top Kayaking

Main changes

·      Eight standards were set to expire without replacement as they no longer align with industry expectations and needs.

·      Five standards were designated expiring and replaced by new standards.

·      20 new standards were developed to capture the essential skills and knowledge across the four water-based contexts at Levels 4-6.

Category C and D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2022
