Summary

Unit standards were reviewed during July and August 2019 by conference call meetings and email, by the External Working Group (EWG) which comprised representatives from industry and the Leather and Shoe Research Association.  The EWG reviewed the unit standards, discussed and agreed to incorporate recommended changes.  Reviewed unit standards were then sent to Consent to Assess holders in August for feedback.  Changes were incorporated where appropriate in consultation with the EWG.

Main changes

·      General Information section was updated with current industry practices.

·      Range statements were included in performance criteria where applicable.

·      Titles of five unit standards were amended to more closely reflect the content.

·      The terms ‘hides and skins’ in the title for standards 8383, 8384, and 8385 were replaced with ‘hides or skins’, as there is no cross over and requires one or the other not both.  This ensures consistency and reflect that a tannery must reference hides and a fellmongery must reference skins.

·      Unit standard 8386 was designated expiring and replaced with two new standards.  This is to have a separate standard for pre-tanning stages which can be carried out in either a fellmongery or tannery; and a standard which covers from tanning to finishing which can only be carried out in a tannery.

Category C unit standard will expire at the end of December 2021

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2021
