Summary

In 2017, standards 30451-30454 were listed on the Directory of Assessment Standards to support Avalanche Risk Management professionals as part of a programme leading to the New Zealand Certificate in Avalanche Risk Management (Level 5) [Ref: 3490].  This saw the realignment of existing Avalanche unit standards and a number of standards were set to expire.

The new programme is working well and meeting the needs of Avalanche Risk Management professionals.  However, it has become apparent that there is a gap for industry in recognising individuals who are operating in mountain environments where an awareness of potential avalanche danger is important for personal safety.

Following a targeted development and consultation process, a single new unit standard was developed to meet industry needs covering knowledge of avalanche danger, for use within the snowsport industry.
