Summary

This review was undertaken as part of the planned cycle of review of NQS unit standards.

A review panel comprising the national moderator and music technology experts from secondary schools and the wider sector was convened to review four unit standards with graded assessment criteria.

In response to initial feedback, the panel developed a new set of seven graded unit standards that focus on musical creativity and real-world application across genres and which require demonstration of a greater range of techniques using music technology equipment.  Assessment support materials (ASMs) have been developed to show how the merit and excellence grades in these unit standards can be assessed.

National consultation on the draft standards was conducted throughout August 2020 via the consultation section of the NZQA website.  Education organisations who had reported results against these standards were contacted directly via email and invited to provide feedback on the reviewed standards.

Main changes

·      Standards 23730, 27656, and 27658 were each replaced with two new standards.  The new standards separate assessments creating sequences using music technology equipment from those that involve using music notation software.  This separation better serves the needs of learners who choose to specialise in a single area.

·      Standard 27657 title and content were amended to better reflect its intended purpose, but overall outcome remains the same.

·      The standards were moved to the current template.

Category C unit standards will expire at the end of December 2022

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2022
