Summary of review and consultation process

Consultation involved current BCITO National Advisory Group members, the two biggest New Zealand suppliers of aluminium extrusions, Architectural Profiles Limited (APL) and Altus, and nine franchise holders throughout the country.

Consultation included face to face meetings, on site visits, and follow up emails and phone calls. Qualification outcomes and structural changes were confirmed to ensure the current and future training needs of the architectural aluminium workforce are being met. The Architectural Aluminium Joinery National Advisory group was heavily involved in the consultation.

Industry deemed the development of the separate retrofit glass strand necessary because the current structure containing retrofit glass outcomes was a training barrier to some contractors. This group had the scope of work for repairs and maintenance but not the retrofitting glass work. The solution is to split the repairs and maintenance outcomes from the retrofitting glass outcomes and create another separate strand.

This review was undertaken with a wide range of industry stakeholders including commercial and residential architectural aluminium joinery operators who operate in metropolitan areas and provincial regions. This group included the two main extrusion suppliers of Architectural Profiles Limited (APL) and Altus as well as a number of fabricating franchises, all heavily involved in training and located throughout the country.

The outcome of the review confirmed changes to the New Zealand Certificate in Architectural Aluminium Joinery (Installer) (Level 4) with optional strand in Repairs and Maintenance (ref: 2942-1), and minor changes to the remaining qualifications.
