Careerforce has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.
Date new versions published August 2021
Planned review date December 2026
Summary
Vision Hearing Screening
The technical unit standards for vision and hearing (23375, 24895, 28526, 28527) were reviewed over the period December 2020 to late May 2021.
Input and feedback were invited from all organisations with consent to assess against the unit standards being reviewed, with web consultation taking place regarding the proposed changes over a two-week period.
In addition, Careerforce conducted face-to-face and virtual hui with key industry and sector representatives including:
• Central Region VHS Network Meeting
• Online hui
• A full day review wānanga
• Consultation with stakeholders covering the following regions: Auckland, Northland, Hawkes Bay, East Coast, Wellington Region, Canterbury Central South Island; representing Vision Hearing Technicians Society, District Health Boards, and Assessors.
Consultation indicated that additional skills and credits are required for learners being assessed against unit standard 28526 in order to better reflect the record keeping and follow-up procedures required.
Pacific Values
The review of unit standard 25987 spanned the period March 2020 to May 2021. A series of virtual hui were conducted, followed by a two-week web consultation opportunity seeking input and feedback from all providers with consent to assess.
Vision Habilitation/Rehabilitation
The vision habilitation/rehabilitation unit standards (29607-29613, 29646-29649) were reviewed between January and March 2021. These standards are used to assess learner achievement in only a single programme of industry training (PIT 121739), which in turn is used in only one organisation, Blind, Low Vision New Zealand (formerly the Blind Foundation). That organisation has formally notified Careerforce of the intention to change its training and qualification system once the current learners have completed their assessments for PIT 121739 and has advised that the standards will not be required after these learners have completed their assessments. As the unit standards will no longer be required it has been decided that they will be designated expiring without replacement while allowing sufficient time for current learners to complete.
Main changes
· Guidance information was updated to reflect current references and resources, and to match Careerforce’s current formatting style.
· Language used in the outcomes and performance criteria was amended to align with current industry conventions.
· The titles of unit standards 23375 and 24895 were changed to incorporate all outcomes.
· Unit standards 23375 and 24895 were amended to relate to regional agencies or services.
· The title of unit standard 25987 was changed for clarity and alignment with current terminology, and some performance criteria in this standard were merged to improve the structure of assessment.
· The title of unit standard 28526 was changed to be more holistic, and an outcome was added to the standard to align it with current training requirements. As a result of adding this outcome, the credit value was increased, but as the overall outcome is the same the ID remains unchanged.
· The title of unit standard 28527 was changed to match the amended language of the standard which uses the term ‘tamariki/children’ in place of ‘children’; performance criteria and range statements were also simplified in this standard.
· 11 Sensory Support unit standards have been designated expiring and will not be replaced
Category D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2023
