Summary

Unit standards in Subfield Animal Care and Handling that had little or no usage in the last two years (prior to 2020) were identified in April 2020.  Consent to assess holders were contacted in May 2020 and asked if they would like any unit standards retained for a specified use, if any changes were required to meet industry requirements, and if the credits accurately reflected the time taken to learn and be assessed for the outcomes.

The unit standards currently under review are those that consent to assess holders requested should be retained for a specified use, and also those unit standards that had usage and were due for review.

Key industry stakeholders involved with the animal care industry and consent to assess holders were contacted in May 2021 by online survey and invited to provide feedback on the amended unit standards.  Changes were incorporated where valid to ensure current industry requirements were met.

Main changes

·      Credits were reduced for units 31500, 31501 and 31502 to more accurately reflect the time taken to learn and be assessed for the revised outcomes.

·      Unit standard 5149 (previously rabbits and rodents) was separated into two individual unit standards for rabbits (31805) and rodents (31804) to meet the requirements of the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care (Level 3) with strands in Companion Animals, Equine, and Rural Animals [Ref: 2487].

·      Titles were amended to more accurately reflect the content for units 5148, 5151, 5152, 5180, 5189, 7337, 21382, 31503 and 31504.

·      New theory unit standards were written for care of birds, rabbits and rodents to meet the requirements of the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care (Level 3) with strands in Companion Animals, Equine, and Rural Animals [Ref: 2487].

Category C unit standard 5149 will expire at the end of December 2023

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2022
