Summary of review and consultation process

MITO commenced an early review of the  New Zealand Certificate in Reticulated Gas Pipelines (Level 4) with strands in Metering and Pressure Control, Polyethylene Pipelines, and Steel Pipelines (with optional strand in Gas Incident Response) with industry stakeholders after feedback from industry identified problems with the current qualification and its strands. The current review ensures the qualification and its strands accurately reflect the needs of the gas industry.

The industry reference group meetings identified that some of the skills and knowledge described in outcomes of this qualification did not accurately reflect industry requirements, relevant indicative credit values and overall qualification credits.  This resulted in removing the Steel Pipelines strand and the optional strand in Gas Incident Response. Changes are made to ensure the qualification accurately reflects the knowledge and skills and time it takes to progress through to a graduate in the gas field.

Further consultation was carried out via email to seek wider feedback from the gas sector. Feedback received was actioned where appropriate. Final stakeholder attestation sign-off from the gas industry reference group was obtained once all feedback was taken into consideration.

Main changes resulting from the review

•             Strategic Purpose Statement was amended to reflect current industry needs.

•             Steel Pipelines and Gas Incident Response strands were removed as these will instead be supported by the Gas Association New Zealand certificate of competency framework

•             Evidence requirements for assuring consistency were updated and general conditions for programmes were amended

•             Credits were reduced from 130-150 to 120 credits to reflect the expected learning and assessment timeframe
