Summary of review and consultation process |
The February 2020 review of the Maritime qualifications found that the New Zealand Certificate in Marine Engineering Class 6 (Level 4) with an optional strand in Marine Engineering Class 5 [Ref: 2509-2] was no longer fit for purpose. This finding was supported by the NZQA Consistency Review and consultation with the Tertiary Education providers using this qualification. Context: Prior to Targeted Review of Qualifications (TROQ) there were two Marine Engineering qualifications, one at NZQF Level 4 and one at Level 5. It was decided during the TROQ to combine the two qualifications at Level 4. Graduates of the combined qualification then progressed to Level 6 to continue their pathway. The NZQA consistency review highlighted the issues related to the qualification core and optional strand levels. It was proposed that the New Zealand Certificate in Marine Engineering Class 6 (Level 4) be split into a 45 credit qualification at Level 4 and a 55 credit qualification at Level 5 making to make it easier for learners to pathway through qualifications. |
Main changes resulting from the review |
New Zealand Certificate in Marine Engineering Class 6 (Level 4) with an optional strand in Marine Engineering Class 5 [Ref: 2509-2] - Optional Strand removed. Credits for optional strand removed from credit range. - Optional strand developed into a standalone qualification. |
