Summary of review and consultation process |
Representatives from Hanga-Aro-Rau Workforce Development Council met with representatives of NZ Sign and Display Association, Inc. (NZSDA), employers, training providers and graduates between March - May 2022 to undertake a combined review of the signmaking qualification and associated unit standards. Meetings were conducted online to discuss industry changes and review how the qualification could be updated to better align with the intended direction of industry towards future industry certification. A technical advisory group was established to develop a new optional strand in installation and associated unit standard. This included a technical expert in sign installation, who was also a certified builder. |
Main changes resulting from the review |
- The title of the qualification was updated to include the new optional strand in Sign Installation. - Total qualification credits increased from 220-260 to 225-265, depending on optional strand. - The credit value for Graduate Profile Outcome (GPO) 1 was increased from 5 to 10 credits to reflect the actual time for learning and assessment of health and safety practices in the workplace. - A minor change to wording was made in GPO 4, as ‘signs and graphics’ is inclusive of ‘displays’. - A minor change to wording was made in GPO 5 to include a wider range of signs instead of ‘flatboard’ signs. - Minor adjustments to wording were made in GPOs 6 and 8 to better reflect sequence of workflow in sign production. - A minor change to wording was made in GPO 9 as ‘electrical lighting systems’ is a broader term, which can also accommodate future changes to lighting technology. - The optional strand in Traditional Signwriting was replaced with an optional strand focussed on hand lettering only as there have been no enrolments to date. GPO 11 has been updated to reflect this change. The new credit value for GPO 11 is 10 credits. - The optional strand in Three-Dimensional Sign Fabrication was updated to reflect the shift of focus to sign fabrication (instead of components). The new credit value for GPO 12 is 30 credits, as content that is already covered in the core signmaking GPOs were removed (e.g. tools, machines). - A new optional strand in Sign Installation was developed to better met industry needs for learners to gain a deeper understanding of compliance requirements in relation to sign installation. GPO 14 was developed to reflect the learning outcomes for this optional strand. |
