Waihanga Ara Rau Construction and Infrastructure Workforce Development Council (WDC) has completed the review of the unit standards listed above.
Date new versions published August 2022
Planned review date December 2027
Summary
Waihanga Ara Rau Construction and Infrastructure WDC initiated a review of the unit standards listed above. The unit standards are used in programmes leading to the New Zealand Certificate in Trowel Trades (Level 4) with strands [Ref: 3137-2]. The qualification was reviewed in 2020. The unit standards listed above were reviewed to align with the graduate outcomes of version 2 of the qualification, the qualification’s Towel Trades Specifications (as referenced in the qualification document), and feedback related to the unit standards from industry representatives.
The review of this suite of unit standards included consultation with five industry groups from December 2021 to June 2022; Brick and Block Laying, Floor and Wall Tiling, Exterior Plastering (Solid Plastering & Proprietary Plaster Cladding Systems), Ferro-cement Tank Manufacture, and Refractory Installation. The industry groups were consulted on via regular email updates, and online Teams meetings. Representatives included employers, peak bodies, suppliers, recognised industry specialists.
Main changes
· Titles of 22 unit standards (one Precast Concrete, three Core Construction, four Solid Plastering, seven Brick and Block Laying, two Floor and Wall Tiling, three Proprietary Plaster Cladding Systems, and two Refractory Installation) were changed to clarify the overarching outcomes of these unit standards.
· Titles and credit values of three unit standards (one Floor and Wall Tiling, and two Proprietary Plaster Cladding Systems) were changed to clarify the overarching outcomes of the unit standards and reflect the notional hours required to develop commercial competence.
· Credit value of one Floor and Wall Tiling unit standard has increased to better reflect the notional hours to develop commercial competence.
· Unit standard 31347 was designated expiring and will not be replaced because it is no longer required by industry.
· Two new Floor and Wall Tiling unit standards have been developed to better describe the current skills and knowledge required of a floor and wall tiler.
· Unit standard 31335 was replaced with two new unit standards to recognise that the skills for preparing for brick laying and preparing for block laying are different, and are now in separate unit standards.
· Three Refractory Installation unit standards were replaced by new unit standards to better reflect current industry practice.
In addition to above, the following changes were made to 43 Category B unit standards to reflect current industry practice and to provide clarity:
· Guidance information, including current references and definitions, was updated,
· Standard Setting Body information was updated,
· “Know” and “Do” fields were changed to “knowledge” and “skills”,
· Details in the Performance Level Guidance section were moved to range statements by the related criterion,
· Minor updates were made to criteria for clarity of current industry practice that does not change the overarching unit standard outcome,
· Performance Level Guidance section was updated to clearly articulate the overarching expected level of capability of graduates of each unit standard.
Category C and D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2025
