Summary
The unit standards were due for review as part of the NQS regular review cycle.
NQS received feedback from teachers using the standards in the Cook Islands who advised the following.
1. The standards at all three levels were similar, and students were not given scope to differentiate learning across the three levels.
2. The standards were limiting in terms of the time period specified (prior to the introduction of Christianity) and the aspects of culture that the students could select. For example, In Level 3, students are given only given three choices.
3. That new standards should be developed to reflect the practical participation of students in the community and their ability to demonstrate their knowledge of culture in their personal context; and that the scope and mode of the presentation allow for more performance opportunities.
Main changes
· The classification of the standards has changed from Cook Islands Tradition and Culture to Cook Islands Cultural Studies.
· Unit standards 28040, 28041 and 28042 were replaced by unit standards 32980, 32981 and 32982 respectively.
Category C unit standards will expire at the end of December 2023
