Summary

 

13 Construction Management standards were reviewed in response to the review in 2020 of the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Related Trades Supervisor (Level 4) [Ref: 2381] and the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Related Trades (Main Contract Supervision) (Level 5) [Ref: 2382].

 

An 8-month consultation was undertaken and involved the following organisations and businesses:

-       Registered Master Builders 

-       Certified Builders Association 

-       The Skills Organisation 

-       Connexis – Infrastructure Industry Training Organisation 

Tertiary Education Organisations (TEOs) 

-       Ara Institute of Canterbury 

-       Manukau Institute of Technology 

-       Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology 

-       Wellington Institute of Technology 

Construction Related Businesses 

Thirty-two industry representatives from a range of small to large construction related businesses participated in one-to-one interviews to provide feedback on the skills and competencies required of operationally focussed supervisors for the sectors below: 

-       Residential Building – group homes and owner operators 

-       Commercial Construction – light commercial, industrial and large scale construction 

-       Construction Related Trades – Foundations Construction, Glazing, Stonemasonry, Brick and Block Laying, Concrete Placing and Finishing, Interior Systems, Tiling, Painting and Decorating, Exterior Plastering, Flooring Installation 

-       Construction Related Manufacturing – Joinery, Precast Concrete, Architectural Aluminium Joinery, Concrete Production, Concrete Product Manufacturing, Window Joinery and Glass Manufacturing, Frame and Truss Manufacturing 

-       Through the Skills Organisation – Plumbing, Drain-laying, Gasfitters, Scaffolding and Roofing trade representatives were notified of this review and invited to participate in consultation.

 

The reviewed qualifications were replaced by the New Zealand Certificate in Construction Trades (Supervision) Level 5 with strands in Residential Building, Commercial Construction, Construction Related Trades and Construction Related Manufacturing [Ref: 4237].  

 

Main changes

-       Eight new unit standards have been developed to align with the replacement qualification requirements.

-       Unit standard 31655 in the Core Construction domain has been reviewed and increased in level from 4 to 5 while the credits decreased from 6 to 5 to better align to the NZQF level descriptors and the actual time required for assessment.

-       10 unit standards in the Construction Management domain will expire on 31 December 2024 as they are no longer required.

-       Unit standards 9635 and 20745 were replaced by unit standards 33046 and 33041 respectively.

 

Category C and D unit standards will expire at the end of December 2024

 

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2024
