Summary of review and consultation process |
The Animal Technology and Veterinary Nursing qualifications contained practicum hours and conditions in line with international standards. Programme development identified that the increased practicum hours required to be completed in veterinary clinics may be a barrier for learners due to the lack of availability of suitable veterinary clinics. Programme development also identified an issue with species requirements fo r Outcomes 1-6. The range of species required to be assessed was a barrier for some learners.
Stakeholder meetings were held in August and September 2022 with Te Pūkenga subsidiaries, VetNurse Plus (Private provider), industry and the Allied Veterinary Professional Regulatory Council (AVPRC) to discuss practicum hours. Changes were made to qualification conditions that allowed practicum hours to be completed in alternative environments, but still allowed the intention of the qualification outcomes to be met. Changes were made to species required to be assessed for Outcomes 1-6.
Feedback was requested, and the revised qualifications were agreed to. It was also agreed that a programme guidance document for programme developers would provide further detail on acceptable practicum situations. No changes were made to the qualification Graduate Profile, including the graduate profile outcomes. |
Main changes resulting from the review |
Changes to General conditions for programmes for all qualifications: · The situations where practicum hours could be achieved were amended to include an alternative environment where learners are able to apply the intention of the outcomes. · The range of species required for assessment of Outcomes 1-6 was amended from ‘cats, dogs, equine and ruminants’ to ‘a range of animal species’. · The availability of a programme guidance document through Muka Tangata Workforce Development Council was added. No last date of assessment has been applied to version 1 of these qualifications, both version 1 and 2 will remain current. Providers will only need to update programmes if they intend to incorporate the new programme conditions. |
