Summary of review and consultation process

The qualifications listed above were reviewed, as part of the 5-yearly review cycle, by a specialist advisory group (AG) consisting of representatives of industry and providers with current programmes of learning leading to the qualifications.

The consultation process was initially informed by industry feedback from a broad range of media organisations across the sector. This feedback indicated that there was a growing need for the inclusion of new media technologies and platforms and cultural competency in professional practice within the sector.

The AG was convened in person in June 2023 to discuss the inclusion of these into the qualifications’ suite. A further online meeting was conducted from July to September to complete the draft amendments.

The proposed changes were distributed for final amendments to key stakeholders, including those involved in the concurrent reviews in Journalism and Screen Production. Feedback on the changes was positive and the proposed changes were accepted and adopted.

Main changes resulting from the review

Changes specific to the individual qualifications are as follows:

·         The New Zealand Certificate in Communications Media (Level 4) [Ref: 3206] was expired and replaced by the New Zealand Certificate in Content Creation (Level 4) [Ref: 4789].

·         New Zealand Diploma in Radio Broadcasting (Level 5) [3210] was expired and replaced by the New Zealand Diploma in Content Creation (Level 5) [Ref: 4790].

·         New Zealand Diploma in Radio Broadcasting (Level 6) [Ref: 3211] was expired without replacement due to the lack of uptake.
