Summary

Waihanga Ara Rau, Registered Master Joiners, organisations with consent to assess, and representatives from the joinery industry have reviewed the unit standards listed above to update them in line with current industry practice, and to ensure they are fit for purpose. There were no objections to four unit standards being expired with replacements.

Consultation with industry representatives and consent to assess holders occurred throughout May and June 2022. Feedback was received and decisions were made in consultation with providers and the technical advisory group of representatives from the joinery industry that resulted in the changes below.

Main changes

·      Titles, guidance information, legislation, performance criteria and range statements were amended across the suite of unit standards to reflect the content and scope of the joinery work, and in line with current industry practice and unit standard template requirements.

·      Standard setting details were updated to reflect the change of standard setting body to Waihanga Aro Rau Construction and Infrastructure Workforce Development Council from 4 October 2021.

·      Unit standards 2544 and 14480, were replaced with 33189, and 2545 and 28208 were replaced with 33190 to reflect current industry practice.

·      Five new unit standards have been developed to address a skills and knowledge gap required and for programmes leading to the New Zealand Certificate in Joinery (Level 4) with strands in Cabinetry, Timber Door and Window, Stairs, and Bench Top and Specialty Surfaces [Ref: 2343].

·      Unit standards 2536, 2557, 28206, 28210, and 28211 were raised from Level 3 to Level 4 to reflect the complexity of skills and knowledge required to demonstrate knowledge and skills for commercial competence.

·      Unit standard 2552 was raised from Level 2 to Level 3 to better reflect the skills and knowledge required to set up, operate, and maintain fixed machinery.

·      Unit standard 28206 was raised from Level 3 to Level 4 with two new outcomes to reflect the complexity of skills and knowledge required by joinery technicians.

·      Unit standard 28217 was amended, and a new outcome was added to include both a mortiser and tenoner.

·      Unit standard 2553 was reduced from Level 5 to Level 4, the credits increased from five to ten, and a new outcome was added to better reflect the skills and knowledge required by joinery technicians.

·      Unit standard 28221 was amended to add an outcome to complete a half-sized set-out to manufacture geometric stairs.

·      Unit standard 28228 was amended to one outcome for practical assessment and to reflect the notional hours for learning and assessment.

·      Unit standards 2552, 2541, 28209, 28210, 28211 credits were amended to reflect the notional hours required to complete training and assessment to set up, operate, and maintain machinery.

Category C unit standards will expire at the end of December 2025.

The last date for assessment of superseded versions of Category B unit standards is December 2025.
