Summary of review and consultation process

Hanga-Aro-Rau is currently reviewing the current suite of nine New Zealand qualifications and 136  standards from the extractive industries domains. Collaborating with Providers, the Mining Board of Examiners (BoE), and employers, we aim to enhance the New Zealand qualifications and standards to effectively meet industry and learner needs for this sector. As part of this review, we are also tasked with developing new micro-credentials that would benefit learners and the industry, building towards the updated qualifications.

The BoE includes representatives from WorkSafe (the regulator), the Institute of Quarrying, the New Zealand Tunnelling Society, MinEx (the National Health & Safety Council for the extractive sector), and industry professionals. The BOE and other stakeholders have emphasised that, as a high-risk industry, it is imperative for training delivery in this sector to be ongoing.

To allow the provision of training as this work progresses, the last dates of entry and assessment of the expiring National qualifications need to be extended.

Hanga-Ara-Rau will prioritise the review of the replacement New Zealand qualifications and the development of micro-credentials to support industry need. Providers are expected to prioritise the development of programmes leading to the replacement New Zealand qualifications and micro-credentials.

Supporting the transition of trainees off the expiring National qualifications will be prioritised by all parties.

No further extensions will be granted.
